I have officially started my search for employment (I can still hear the cheers of excitement and relief from my Mum when I informed her!!) As a student who didn't study a degree with an obvious career-path, such as nursing, I had very little direction upon completing my degree. All I had were a lot of texts on Marx and some big decisions to be made.
Unfortunately as Karl Marx himself was very unlikely to offer me a job (rest his soul) I have had to consider what career path I would like to take. A scary, and somewhat difficult decision when the options appear pretty much endless. As a starting point I thought about my key skills, interests and most importantly the jobs I would not want to do. Unsurprisingly the latter part came quite easily...
Despite reading and enjoying Criminology, I currently do not fancy a career in the criminal justice field. At first this break away from my academic discipline worried me, with fears employers would view me as flaky. However I now believe it's okay to break away from an initial academic interest, and that you shouldn't feel penned in and forced to go down a particular route solely because you studied it!!
Therefore I focused on what I did like -People, events, organisation and social media all stood out. This naturally led to jobs in PR, Communications, Events and Human resources, which all seem like good places to start my search. And so my search begins...
